Remembering Halprin

In a field that has had, and still has, problems with its professional identity and recognition, Lawrence Halprin established himself as a highly visible and clearly defined practitioner. There were others. But none had the presence before a wide audience of professionals, clients, and the general public that Larry had. All too often the landscape architect is seen as a subservient design team member to architects. Larry wouldn’t allow that.

Up By Roots: Healthy Soils and Trees in the Built Environment - Workshop - Presented by James Urban

Up By Roots is a one-day workshop that highlights the principles of soil science and their use in facilitating the growth of healthy trees and developing water-efficient landscapes. This workshop includes lectures and field worki ntended to introduce the underlying scientific principles guiding tree biology and soil-water relations. It is only through a healthy respect for these guiding principles that one can effectively design, install, and manage soils and trees in the urban landscape.

2010 Professional Awards - Call for Entries

What is the Sustainable Sites Initiative?

The Sustainable Sites Initiative is an interdisciplinary effort by the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and the United States Botanic Garden to create voluntary national guidelines and performance benchmarks for sustainable land design, construction, and maintenance practices.

No Longer Misunderstood Landscape Architects Enjoy Renaissance

Long considered more landscaper than architect, LAs are finding their role increasingly more significant.

By Alex Padalka

Landscape architects are shaping the future of our cities as seen from the sidewalk – and the roof, and the internal courtyard and along the highway. They are responsible for keeping human waste out of our beaches, our cities from burning up in a haze of melting asphalt and our fragile psyches from self-destructing due to too much stress.

Sustainable Exhibit 2010

As part of the 2010 ASLA Texas Regional Conference and Expo, the ASLA Texas Chapter
Executive Committee and the Sustainable Sites Initiative wanted to include a NEW
opportunity to highlight landscape architects and their leadership in the “green”,
sustainable movement. Therefore, this year we are asking our members to submit their
ideas for a sustainable exhibit to be set up in the exhibit hall for all to see and learn
about. In fact, our new PR effort for the profession will help the Texas Chapter get public

Urge Your Representatives and Senators to Become a Complete Streets Cosigner

ASLA advocates are visiting Capitol Hill this week as part of ASLA's Mid-Year Meeting. They will meet with their legislators to discuss important transportation policies, namely Complete Streets legislation that was recently introduced in the House (H.R. 1443) by Representative Doris Matsui (CA) and in the Senate (S. 584) by Senator Tom Harkin (IA). You can make their in-person meetings have even greater impact by contacting your Representatives and Senators TODAY to support Complete Streets legislation.
