Dallas Arboretum Storybook Design Competition

Texas ASLA members with three local landscape architecture firms are chosen as finalists in this year Dallas Arboretum Storybook playhouse design competition.

DALLAS, TX - To capture the imagination of children and promote the importance of literacy, the Dallas Arboretum announces the Storybook Playhouse exhibition, coming to the gardens on March 7th through December 31, 2009. 14 interactive playhouses based on classic children’s stories were selected by a panel of distinguished jurists, who were chaired by Mrs. Laura Leppert, literacy advocate and the wife of Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert. . The Storybook Playhouse exhibition will help launch the 25th Annual Dallas Blooms; this year appropriately themed ‘A Classic’.

Laura Leppert, the 2009 Storybook Playhouse Jurist Panel Chairman, comments: “This is such an exciting project that will provide children a way to interact with nature as well as explore literature through play.  Each entry submitted for this competition was thought out in great depth to fully capture each story in a way that would captivate children of all cultures
Twenty three playhouse entries were submitted from DFW area architects.

TBG Partners: Red Fish, Blue Fish

“Each winning entry will be placed in exclusive spots throughout the garden, hand picked by the Dallas Arboretum horticulture department.  The playhouses will each be sited in the landscaped area that best captures the theme of the story throughout the changing seasons.” Dave Forehand, Vice President of Gardens at the Dallas Arboretum, commented.

23 playhouse entries were submitted from DFW area architects.  The 14 winners of the competition who will have their playhouse on display at the Dallas Arboretum in 2009 include:

• One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish- TBG Partners
• Little Prince – Page Southerland Page
• Treasure Island – CSD Architects
• The Lorax – Schrickel, Rollins and Associates
• Hope for the Flowers – Gensler
• City Green – La Terra Studio
• Thumbelina – Corgan
• The Owl and the Pussycat – Larson & Pedigo
• Teremok – Urban Design Group
• Alice in Wonderland –Baez Consulting
• The Bamboo Cutter’s Daughter – Corgan

Four awards were given after the houses were installed.


• Most Creative: Little Prince, Page Southerland Page
• Most Sustainable: Peter Pan, HKS Architects
• Best Story Interpretation: Alice in Wonderland, Baez Consulting
• Best of Show: The Lorax, Schrickel Rollins and associates
